No animal is more representative of the American Frontier and the Old West than the American Buffalo (Bison). Once abundant across much of North America, this majestic animal was hunted to near extinction in the latter half of the 19th Century. Thanks to a few forward-thinking individuals, including former buffalo hunter Buffalo Bill Cody, small herds were protected so that the species could be preserved. Buffalo Facts: Average lifespan in the wild: 15-20 years (up to 40 years in captivity). Size: The American Buffalo is the largest land mammal native to the western hemisphere. They can reach heights of over 6 ft. at the shoulder and can be up to 10 ft long. Weight: 750-2,205 lbs. Pre-Columbian buffalo herds were estimated to be over 60 million. By the 1880s, however, wholesale slaughter had reduced the population to a few hundred. Though massive and ungainly-looking, buffaloes are surprisingly fast and agile. They can leap over barbed wire fences and reach speeds of up to 40 mph. In Yellowstone National Park, which hosts one of the largest remaining buffalo herds, 4 times as many people have been killed or injured by buffaloes than by bears. Buffalo meat is lower in fat and cholesterol and higher in protein than beef, chicken or turkey. The well-worn trails established by migrating buffalo herds were used by the first white settlers and became the first main thouroughfares of the American Frontier. A buffalo's mood can be determined by the position of its tail. If the tail is sticking straight up, watch out! It's angry and getting ready to charge.
