Advice From a Cardinal will delight any bird lover or self-help enthusiast.
The Northern Cardinal has long been an iconic symbol of winter and a favorite among backyard birdwatchers. Here are some interesting facts about the Cardinal:
~ Average lifespan in the wild: 1-3 years (the oldest wild, tagged Cardinal lived at least 15 years, 9 months!)
~ Size: 8-9"
~ Weight: 1.5-1.8 oz.
~ Wingspan: 10-12"
~ Official bird of 7 states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia.
~ The female Cardinal is one of the few female American songbirds that sings, often while sitting on her nest.
~ Cardinals are socially monogamous.
~ Clutch size: 3-4 eggs, with 2-3 clutches per year.
~Cardinals do not migrate, neither do they molt with the seasons. Thus backyard birdwatchers can enjoy the male's bright red plumage throughout the year.
~ The male brings food to his mate while she is sitting on the nest, and also feeds the young after hatching, as the female is often sitting on a new clutch of eggs. After the fledglings leave the nest, they are cared for by the male for about 3 weeks.
